Fountain of Youth

I’ve been trying a ton of serums recently in my never-ending quest for the fountain of youth.  I guess you could call it an obsession, but I’ve seen people more obsessed (ahem).  Maybe it’s because of my impending birthday (43) but I’m definitely always on the lookout for new products to improve my complexion.  I’d like to do a comprehensive post on all of the serums I have tried recently, but since I’ve been pretty remiss with my posts due to a busier-than-normal time at work, busier-than-normal kid obligations and some little recent holiday, I want to get this post up today.
While serums have been around quite a while, the current trend seems to really be about organically derived forms of hyaluronic acid, green tea, vitamin C and/or E and reservatrol or retinol.  I like a vitamin C serum for daytime use as these tend to be lighter formulas, while I strongly prefer a thicker, more emollient formula for nighttime use.  This one accomplishes that goal – and at a price point of roughly $15.00 for a 1.8 ounce bottle – you absolutely must try it.
Applejack Life  is a family-operated Canadian-based company that creates natural, organic, vegan and cruelty-free skincare products.  All of their products are manufactured in the US and are satisfaction-guaranteed.  The company provided me with their Retinol 2.5% serum for review.
The simplest way of sharing my thoughts with you on the product is to tell you this: I am currently traveling – and I brought this serum along with me.  I think that’s really saying something.  I try to travel product-light (don’t laugh) and usually bring along all of the little trial packets of skincare products that I’ve received while I travel, but I wasn’t willing to leave home for two days without this serum.
Retinol serums work best when used at night.  While this product could easily be worn under make-up, retinol can increase photo-senisitivity, so I stick to this at night and go with a Vitamin C day serum.  Of course, most of my daytime routine does contain sunscreen anyway, I just felt the need to point that little nugget out.  I know, you can thank me later! 😉
But back to what I like about this product – it is virtually odorless, which is huge for me.  I can handle light citrusy fragrances, but much more than that and I’m out.  It’s a moot point with this product, however, because it has no fragrance at all.  I also really, really like the consistency.  It’s a nice, thick clear gel that absorbs rapidly and doesn’t leave a residue like some of the other serums I’ve used.  This is a big issue that I’ve had with several Vitamin C serums, and I don’t like to wear those under make-up
because it makes my skin feel a little “dusty” after a few hours.  I haven’t had that residue with this product.
Finally, and most importantly, I feel like this product is making a dramatic and visible change to my skin – the texture is improved and fine lines and wrinkles seem less-pronounced.  Overall, I’m very happy with this product.  I will keep trying to find the ULTIMATE serum and have a long list of others to try out including some from Dr. Brandt, Skinceuticals and Asana – but this one has definitely taken the role of front-runner at the moment and I highly recommend this product.
Let me know what your favorite serums are!  I’m sure you all have your favorites and I’m interested in trying to find the anti-aging catladyholy grail – because I do not want to end up overdoing the botox, fillers or surgery like some people!
