Foundation FACE-off

foundations-copy-copyGood evening, lush lovelies! I am three days in to my Foundation face-off!  I’ve been updating daily on our new Facebook page – come follow there @thefabulush!

In case you aren’t aware, I’m justifying my obsessive foundation shopping habit by testing two foundations daily, half on each side of my face.  Crazy, right?  The first day was hilarious – in the middle of a business meeting, one of my colleagues complimented my foundation and said that she loved the dewy finish.  Of course, I had to ask which side of my face looked  better!  🙂  There were four women in this meeting which I promptly derailed by discussing foundation and not the actual business at hand.  Obviously, all things besides the foundation are equal. I am prepping and priming my skin the same all over and using the same concealer and color corrector in the same areas and manner.  And I always, always apply sunscreen whether the foundation contains it or not (and you should too – and yes, I WILL lecture you on this topic because no one lectured me on this topic when I was 20 and it would have mattered.  My daughter’s are already forced to wear sunscreen on their beautiful little faces daily (11 and 12).

Here’s the update so far:

Day 1 – Too Faced’s Born This Way ($34) vs. Clinique Superbalanced ($25) – Crazy tough call.  Both foundations looked really beautiful when first applied and both held up incredibly well.  The Clinique side nudged out Born This Way for holding up slightly better throughout the day, for being quite a bit less expensive and for containing SPF.  Random Notes:  These are both really great products and I would be happy with either as my primary foundation.  I’m completely shocked at how much I love the Clinique and really happy with the price point!

Day 2 – Make Up Forever Ultra HD Invisible Coverage Foundation ($43)  vs. Marc Jacobs re(Marc)able Full Cover Foundation Concentrate ($55) – Another super tough call.  Both held up amazingly well throughout the day, including shedding a few tears late in the day.  Marc Jacobs won out – ever so slightly – as the MUFE settled into my fine lines and wrinkles a bit more early in the day and required a bit of buffing.  Both of these will be back in head-to-head competition against other contenders, however, as they looked so great.  Random Notes:  Everyone always shrieks at the price of the Marc Jacobs foundation, but it’s called a concentrate for a reason.  It is very concentrated.  I have had the same bottle for at least a year now and it’s half full still.  A little goes a long way – and the finish is really unlike anything else I’ve ever used.

Based on how great all four of these products looked throughout LONG work days, I began to think that maybe it was the rock-star primer I was using instead of the foundation.  I have been using Sunday Riley’s Effortless Breathable Tinted Primer ($48) for a couple of weeks now and it’s really, really good.  It is quite pricey, but the bottle is seriously huge and it only takes a small amount of product to cover your whole face.  I completely forgot about this mental conversation this morning when I started my third challenge, however.  Luckily or unluckily depending on perspective, today’s challenge proved that a great primer cannot save an average foundation.

Day 3 – tarte’s Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation SPF 15 ($39) vs. MAC Pro-Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation ($34) – I’ve struggled with this particular tarte formula since I bought it.  The best way I can describe it is that it’s tight.  It’s really, really thick and I like it when I mix my Algenist Luminizing Drops into it to loosen and brighten it up.  But for the purpose of this test, I couldn’t do that.  A little goes a long way, it’s definitely full-coverage, but I just do not like it.  Oddly enough, it’s way earlier in the day than I’ve typically assessed my face and it’s hands down better than the MAC.  This is the first MAC product I’ve ever used and I am extremely UN-impressed.   One side of my face looked horrible by noon.  It’s almost completely worn off around my mouth and chin and you can easily see all the things that I use foundation to not see.  Yuck.  I’m kind of annoyed that I have errands to run before I go home today.

Thank you for reading!  If you have any comments to share, I would love to hear them as always.  Have you tried any of these?? Any suggestions for which to should compete the rest of the week?  I’m going to be trialing some of the more finicky-to-apply products over the weekend when I have more time to dress!

xo, Amanda
